A new Philadelphia Inquirer column launched in the last month explores how literature is changing in the digital medium, calling the phenomenon DigitaLit.
 
From bloggers who review audio files of poetry readings as if they were pop singles to writers of interactive fiction who invite readers to participate – making the work part innovative literature, part game – literature is having no trouble adjusting. Novelists are also emailing their stories out one chapter at a time, enhancing them with images and links, bypassing publishers in the process.

For example L. Lee Lowe, an American-born writer living in Germany, has been publishing her novel Mortal Ghost in weekly installments on her blog. After completion, it will be available for free download on PDF. It’s the interaction with her readers that keeps Lowe plugging away at her book.

Lowe has even commissioned Bill Uden, a U.K. peforming arts student, to record her readings so that they’re available for podcast download.

The New York Times reports that Amazon, Google, and Sony are again focusing on digitizing the age-old book, a US$ 35 billion a year business.

Amazon is preparing to launch its own digital reader. Called the Kindle and priced between US$ 400 and US$ 500, the reader connects wirelessly to a new ebook section on the Amazon site.

Meanwhile, Google will start charging users for full access to the digital copies of books stored in its database. Publishers set the price for access, and will be sharing profits with the search engine giant.
This week, Google also rolled out a tool that lets users paste excerpts of books into other websites.

Ebooks returned to the limelight with last year’s introduction of the US$ 300 Sony Reader. Its long battery life and ability to store 80 books has been compared to Apple’s musical approach with the introduction of the iPod.
These moves have driven Barnes & Noble to rethink its decision to stop selling ebooks in 2003. Over the next 18 months, it too will begin selling ebooks on its website.

Yahoo erwartet eine steigende Nachfrage nach eBooks und hat daher für seine Yahoo! Shopping online commerce destination eine neue eBooks Kategorie mit Titeln der vier wichtigsten Verleger (Pnguin Putnam, Simon & Schuster, Random Hose und HarperCollins eröffnet berichtet CNN:

Technology will make it convenient for consumers to access digital content and that will push demand for e-books, Rob Solomon, VP and general manager of Yahoo! Shopping said in a statement.

While e-books have yet to be widely embraced, the publishers are hoping to position themselves in the digital market in anticipation of e-books going mainstream, the companies said.

Consumers will be able to download books from Yahoo! Shopping in either Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader or Microsoft Reader platforms. Both programs are free and can be downloaded from links on Yahoo! Shopping, the company said.

The service is currently only available in the U.S.
